As it turned out, it had taken them a while longer than was healthy but in the end they’d been able to defuse what they called a ‘viable explosive device’ of the type commonly found in the war-torn areas of the Middle East.

‘And you say,’ said the army captain in command of the unit, ‘that you know who did this and that you’d caught him in the act but he’d managed to get away, even though he’d twisted his ankle and you’d kicked him almost unconscious?’

Miller didn’t blame the man for sounding incredulous; it was a feeling he shared.

‘It could have done a lot of damage,’ the captain continued. ‘We got here in the nick of time. Anyway, that’s us done and dusted.’ And he was gone.

Siobhán hadn’t made her presence obvious until they were alone. There’d been enough of her colleagues milling around to make up for her absence. She’d turned up, accompanied by Gárda Dempsey, when he’d rung to tell her what was going on. She’d argued, once again, that Dempsey didn’t count as the ‘fuzz’ he had told her not to notify. ‘Look,’ she’d said, ‘the bomb squad and the lads here are going to put in their own reports anyway so Folan is going to get to hear about it one way or the other.’

Miller had acknowledged that but was also keen to make good use of the time they had before that happened. ‘Anyway,’ he’d argued, ‘we’re not even sure it wasn’t your super put him up to this.’ He could get his digs in all right when he had a mind to. Still, there was no denying he might be right. It might easily have been part of Folan’s tactics to scare Miller into giving up any ideas he might have had regarding the securing of Maia’s liberty.

‘So what are you going to do?’ It was Dempsey who asked the question.

The Georgian had disappeared by the time Miller had got back from his car. He’d thought he’d heard another voice muttering in the darkness and a few moments later he’d heard a car drive away from the front of the building. The funny thing about that voice was that it had spoken in English and in tones he thought he recognised.

‘I’m going to find the Georgian. And I’m going to find whoever he has helping him, and I’m going to make them pay for what they did to those girls and what they would like to do to Maia.’

‘Not making threats, are you?’ Dempsey was no fool.

‘Not a bit of it.’

The two Guards exchanged a look that resulted in Dempsey walking away, leaving Siobhán to assure Miller that he had nothing to worry about as far as her colleague was concerned.
